Over this past week, Brett Favre finally came into the spotlight and decided to talk to the media. He was interviewed by Joe Buck on an HBO show, and explained what has happened with him the past few months.
Favre did say that he has been in contact with the Vikings, and it seems like there are only a couple more hurdles for the Pro Bowl quarterback to climb before he lands another starting job in the NFC North. So many times I was just fed up with the Favre fiasco that I did not want to hear about it, because the next day we all knew he would just change his mind and go in the exact opposite direction. Favre was also referring to the Vikings and himself as “we”, or in other words, basically stating that if the Vikings want him, and they likely do, and they can work out a contract, and we have a lot of cap space, Favre will be in a purple jersey next season. Like it or not, that old rival from across the way is going to lead the Vikings in 2009. Personally, I like the fit with the addition of Favre, Peterson will see less coverage, Berrian will be much more effective, and with all that going on, it appears there will be no one skilled enough to cover Percy Harvin adequately. Favre will open this offense up if Childress lets him, and the Vikings could maybe even improve on their record from last season. Favre does bring a lot of interceptions though, so be prepared for a roller coaster ride next year, but he also led the Jets to an 8-3 record last year before his bicep injury. Favre did have surgery on that bicep about two weeks ago, but he said he still has some pain, will that affect him big time? We will have to wait to find out.
Another important thing now, is the probability of another quarterback being cut. For Rosenfels, this has apparently been a trade from hell, as he was told he would be able to fight for the starting job after years of being a backup, but now he may be fighting for a spot on the team. Tarvaris Jackson also looked to be improving at the end of last season as he torched the Cardinals and Lions in consecutive weeks, but he is now in the same spot as Sage Rosenfels is in this mess. Right now it looks as if John-David Booty is the odd man out, and as the youngest quarterback on the roster I would hate to see him leave, but that is all left up to management, and how well Booty improved from last year’s pre-season slump. There is also the option that all four guys stay on the roster, especially since we really can’t expect Brett Favre to stay around for more than a year or two at best.
As of now though, Brett has yet to sign on the dotted line, so there is still no quarterback on the roster with a Pro Bowl appearance, but maybe in a few days, Brett will join the purple.
