Brett Favre - in purple?
After just one season in New York, it appears Brett Favre will be out, as quickly as he came in. As many of you rememeber, Favre went through a very long debate with himself, Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy, and Packers’ owner Ted Thompson, less than twelve months ago. Favre thought Minnesota would be a good place to play in then, and now Peter King thinks nothing has changed.
King told ESPN that he thought Favre wouldn’t play if he couldn’t “play where he really wants to play.” King later stated that he had a “gut feeling” that Favre wanted to be a Viking.
I know this is potentially big news for Vikings’ fans everywhere, and it is still just a Peter King speculation at this point, but it does make some sense. Favre seemed to really want to play for the Vikings last year, and after a year in the big apple it is likley he would rather play in a smaller market.
If Favre actually came to the Vikings, it could do wonders for the franchise both on and off the field. Favre playing in Minnesota would more than likely get the state to look at the plans for a new stadium. The Vikings are in desperate need for some help in that area, especially with the lease on the Metredome set to expire, the exact same year that the new stadium in Los Angeles is expected to open.
On the field the Vikings are likely a better team with Favre. If Favre really wants to play in Minnesota, he is likely to at least consider a lower pay check, so that the Vikings could bring him some help. There is an obvious need to address the offensive line in the off-season, with Birk leaving, and Cook playing suspect at best. If Favre would play for a slightly smaller salary, the Vikings could use both the free agency, and the draft, to bolster an already good offense.
Last season Favre finished the season on a low note in New York. If Favre came here, Viking fans would have to be willing to accept the more turnovers he comes with too. Just last season, Favre threw 22 interceptions, and fumbled the ball a whopping 10 times. However, with Favre also comes his 22 touchdown passes, and great fourth quarter drives.
For all those wondering, the Jets would likely have to cut Favre for him to end up in the purple too. If the Jets do not cut Favre, they would have to send Green Bay three first round draft picks.
As of now, Peter King is just speculating, and it still seems a long way off, but if Favre did come here, the Vikings would almost certainly be a hot pick to win it all. Peterson would likely have more room to run, and the wide receivers would likely be made better by Favre’s appearance too.
Brett Favre in purple and gold could still be a possibility.

I gotta admit, I would be thrilled if Favre came to Minnesota. Like you said, it would solidify our franchise in Minnesota, and may open some new stadium talks.
It would be weird to see him in a purple jersey, but I would welcome Favre to Minneapolis.

haha, I thought he would be here for 08, but alas he went to the Jets, but it seems as if they do not want him anymore

If they’re content with T-Jack, something is wrong.
I was a “believer” last year, and I still think Jackson is better than he’s shown… but he’s no NFL quarterback.
Favre is a much better option than whatever we have, that’s for sure.
January 26th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
yes, this is true. I think Jackson may be good someday, but not now

Farve lost with Green Bay in the 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2007 playoffs. He DID NOT take the “Pack” to the playoffs in 2005 & 2006 nor the Jets in 2008. Why do the Vikings want a has been?
January 27th, 2009 at 9:27 am
Personally, I don’t want him. Look for my rebuttal soon!
January 27th, 2009 at 10:28 am
David, I can agree he is no Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but in 2007 he looked good. Personally I just want a QB who can open up the run game, then we would have a dynamic offense. When Peterson sees 8 or 9 guys in thebox, there is no reason that we should have a QB who can not throw over the top of them. Plus Favre’s long ball and Berrian’s speed would be a sick combination. It could end up like Gregg Jennings and Favre.

Those of you wanting Favre are not real Viking fans. There is more to the game of football than winning. I am not interested in the superbowl if it means winning with Green Bay’s quarterback. Have a little dignity.
January 28th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
ha, I can see your point Jen, but as we are 0-4 lifetime in the Superbowl, I would just like to see us win one in my lifetime. We can always say Peterson is our best player anyway.
January 28th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
I know how you feel about winning one before I die, but Favre has been in one NFC championship in the last ten years. The Jets got him for PR and look at how that worked out for them. If Brett couldn’t get to the superbowl in the last 10 years, how’s he gonna do it now he’s old? He should have retired with Green Bay. It’s sad really. Besides, how about next year and the year after that? Let TJ start growing up now, or draft a Cassel. That would be a better chance for us than old fart Favre.
January 28th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Also, wouldn’t mind a younger Veteran like 32 old McNabb so we’d at least have him for a couple years.
January 28th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
True, I would perfer McNabb too, and every year they talk about him leaving Philly, but he never does, it saddens me.
January 28th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I know we do need a QB who can open things up for Adrian, too bad the Pats will franchise Cassel. McNabb should leave Philly, they don’t appreciate him. Just like Rodgers in GB, the fans treat him like dirt. That’s one GB castoff I wouldn’t mind having. It’s funny though to read SOME of their comments. The rational fans say great let Favre go to Minnesota so he can throw to his old team.
January 28th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
I agree, Jen. I wouldn’t mind Rodgers at all.
January 29th, 2009 at 9:36 am
Yeah, at least Aaron participates in the offseason and even flew around the country to practice with his WR’s at times. Brett has too much of a chip on his shoulder. Always has, even at first when he was young. I’m old enough to remember watching him fight with Holmgren on the sidelines over play calling. He acted like Tony Romo.

no matter what you say, Vikings are better with favre then without him. I don,t think you guys are lucky enough to have him. Yes he is old and is not the same in cold weather, but if he plays 8 games in the a dome and if vikings end up as a top seed in there division then they can have the home field advantage. trust me you want him.
February 4th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
prince, I think you could be right. I think it is a big risk to take Favre. He could be washed up, or he could have a rebound like 2007.
February 5th, 2009 at 8:23 am
wow.. this would be huge if he came here.. i would welcome winning a bowl, which we would do, if favre came here. but at what expense? I have been bleeding purple since i was born and it would be very unjust and humiliating to have one of our biggest enemies over the years, to come in and win.. ESPECIALLY win it all! how about moving up in the draft and taking a gifted QB? I hear the lions want to drop their No. 1 overall.. make a move vikings, and NOT the wrong one!
February 6th, 2009 at 11:37 am
You are all missing the point. We hate the “Packers”, not specifically the players. What could possibly be a better insult to the packers than to use perhaps their all-time best player that they had thrown away and discarded as useless to propel ourselves to not only 2 regular season wins over our arch-rivals, but also division, conference, league championships. I know I love it every time Sharper makes a game-changing interception or Longwell kicks a game winner, but it is exponentially more exciting when it is against the packers! I would prefer someone like Cassel for longevity but someone like Favre for a year or two wouldn’t be too bad either. And relying on the draft is kind of risky also-you might draft an Akili Smith or Tim Couch in the first round when all you really needed to do was wait for the 7th round to draft Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, Kurt Warner, etc. Not to mention the time spent developing (for example TJack) them. We need to spend the money for a top tier free agent.

As a lifetime die-hard Packer fan, I think it would be great if Favre returned with the Viking’s. Then he can add another dozen picks to our defenses tally. Our secondary would be drooling over the multiple opportunities they would have. And lets not forget what Dom Caper’s, and our new draft picks would like to do to the old man!

DEAR JOEL,
YOU ARE A FOOL!
As a Viking fan, Brett at 40 is better than any QB we have now! If he really wants to play and he really wants to stick it to the the (fudge) Packers…than the Vikes are the place to be, and you can not tell me that as a Packer fan you would not be sick to your stomach to see Brett in purple!!!!!!!
It is like Randy Moss wearing a packer uniform!
I would be sick.
May 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Okay, everyone, listen up: if there is an opportunity for Favre to come to the Vikes, it would be a Godsend. Practically anyone is better than T-Joke and Rosen-something. Let me explain…
Yes, he’s old. (But so is Kurt Warner….and the Cards were 30 seconds away from a Super win) Take a close look at last season. Favre nearly took the Jets, who were 4-12 the year before, to a division title. A 5 game improvement (9-7). Yes, he threw a bunch of picks, but also threw 22 TD’s (remember the 6 TD game?) and threw for 3500 yards. Tavaris couldn’t throw for over 2000 yards. Favre changed their offense single handedly.
Minnesota was 10-6 last year, WITH shaky QB’s. What record could they have with one of the greatest of all time? Minnesota is BUILT TO WIN NOW. Remember, he’d have the best back in the league to hand off to, so he wouldn’t be pressured to throw all the time.
Frankly, who cares if Brett was an arch rival for years. If Minnesota is serious about a championship, they’ll have to consider Favre over…..Tavaris (gag) Jackson. ~Andre

Football fans, there is a reason Favre is not with the Packers. As a Packer fan, we all love the guy and he made every game exciting to watch. You didn’t know what was going to happen. It was a little like street ball, and Brett could do things you would not see anywhere else. Howver, his personality is not only his greatest asset, but also his downfall. He certainly could have stayed if he was willing to share time with Rodgers. And yes, we hate the Vikings and do not like the fact that some of our players are there, but that’s football. None of us really want to see Brett in purple and gold, but I’m afraid Joel is right; the Pack will pick him apart. Even though he is not the QB he was, the Pack should have figured out how to keep him for PR if nothing else. Thompson is kind of an idiot, but, I must admit, Rodgers did well. If he would have gotten hurt and couldn’t play last year, Thompson would have been toast, but AAron could be the best new starter in the league and the future for the Pack. If they would have kept Favre, Rodgers would be gone. Any serious rebuilding team should not rely on an old veteran for their main QB. The veterans can play some great games once in awhile, as Brett will, but it’s a young man’s game. Brett could have been invaluable to coach Rodgers along, but his ego would not allow it. He has always been a little whiney and is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and I’m sure was quite a challenge for coaches. Maybe not as bad as Moss, but you get the idea. We in Packerland love him anyhow, and if he plays for the Vikes, which I’m almost sure he will, it will be his last year.

As a life long Viking Fan Living in Wisconsin since 1991,I personally cannot wait until Favre joins the Vikings. Packer fans hate the Bears,Lions,Dallas and anyone else who upset their dreams, but now the team they hate the most is the Vikings. They all breathed a sigh of relief when we foolishly gave away one of the best receivers in the game. They hate the Vikings and they Hate their fans even more because WE are their biggest threat to them and have been for years. Favre could have gone to the Bears or Lions who needed a great QB but No! He wants to play for the Vikings period. Ted Thompson and half the Packer fans turned their backs on him when he was having a hard time with management. They traded him, didn’t want him anymore. He not only wants to play for the Vikings,He wants to Win. Not only over the Packers but to prove everyone wrong again. Favre would be the best QB Minnesota has had in years and years. Cullepper had a championship team handed to him and look how that turned out. It use to make me sick after every game I watched. Warren Moon, Randal Cunningham both older veterans of the game took our team farther than any QB since Tarkington. Years and Years of getting your hopes up only to have them dashed again and again is getting old. Alot older than Favre. For those Packer fans who think their defense will pick him apart are dead wrong,He knows your team and defense better than you do. He will be the one picking you apart because you know your defense is WEAK. This is the best hope we have have. Anyone thinking Favre couldn’t make a whole season is crazy, he has started every game for years. He will open the line for our outstand RB and can actually throw the ball downfield,I repeat DOWNFIELD. TJ throws 90% of his passes less than 10 yards and to the sidelines. Favre wants to win and he wants to rub the team he gave everything to noses in the dirt! This will be the most entertaining year of football in my lifetime and yes I’ve been around long enough to watch My team lose 3 Superbowls(I was too younge to see the fourth loss in the 60’s.) I live in Wisconsin and as I always tell everyone, “I like the Packers,I just Hate their fans!” Don’t hate Favre because he WAS a Packer and WAS our enemy, not any more. Look at him as a Former Jets player comming over to our side, the winning side. Let bygones be bygones and do whats best for the team and not your personal ego this player has bruised with outstanding play for years.

I guess if Brett wants to play for the Vikings then that’s what will happen. So many people talk about him like he is the God of football, and he isn’t. He hold lots of records. Yes…. career 464 touchdowns, but also 310 interceptions. So if he wants to play I will be there to watch, especially when he plays the Packers and gives the ball right to us. Brett has tarnished his own reputation. If he comes back he will probably only hurt himself more. He wants to win the Superbowl every year…if his team doesn’t do well then he quits or “pretends to retire”. I was a big Brett Favre fan but that has all changes. He is simply digging his own grave in regards to his reputation and football career. He will fit in well with the Vikings a team full of big headed hot shots who never seem to do much.
